The videogame unit is finally winding down – next Tuesday, we’ll be evaluating each other’s games and providing some considered feedback. Then students will have two days to finish up any changes that need to be made.

The final version of their games will be due on Friday, March 9.

Really, this is quite unusual – I can’t remember the last time this has happened twice in a row (much less at all…). Still, I’ve been hit with another unavoidable responsibility which necessitates the cancellation of tomorrow’s help session. My apologies once again.

Social Studies

Today, we commenced work on a small research project. One underlying motive in the way this project is being done, is I’m encouraging students to be responsible to keep themselves organized and to seek out solutions to the (small) problems which they will encounter throughout this project on their own.

Don’t forget that this project is DUE on March 6.

A trailer for the Oscar nominated film by Alexander Payne, The Descendants.

A clip from the podcast series related to Baz Luhrmann’s 2008 film, Australia. This particular episode focuses on costume design and, in particular, how it relates to character.

Social Studies – Quiz

Just a reminder to everyone: the Chapter 7 Quiz is in one week – don’t forget to check the Homework and Events Calendar!

Today we began a new research assignment where students must research a pertinent historical figure from the period of history we’ve been studying. Then, they will be creating facebook profiles for them using a tool called “Fakebook”. The assignment (and all materials associated with it) are located in the course resources box to the right. A direct link to the assignment file is also right here.

This assignment is DUE Monday, March 5.

This Week’s Poll!

Film Studies – Short Film

Here’s the film associated with a small writing exercise we did in class today. Again, the emphasis is on theme. This film is entitled “Balance” and was created by Wolfgang and Christoph Lauenstein. It (deservedly) won the 1989 Oscar for best animated short.

In the comments below, discuss, in 150 words or less, your opinion of the film. Please put particular emphasis on the theme of the film.

Film Studies – Short Film

Here’s the short film we watched in class today. We used it as a basis for a discussion of theme.
